Recently, when there was a big demonstration at Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police had installed smart cameras equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to keep an eye on the crowd. These cameras are called Facial Recognition System (FRS). Through these, many accused present in the crowd could be identified.
2,873 people were examined closely
Police said that the AI system scanned thousands of people present in and around Jantar Mantar during the protest. According to official information, about 2,900 people were identified as having criminal records. Upon more detailed investigation of the 2,873 people, the police found that 989 people had prior criminal cases registered against them, which included charges like murder, robbery, rape and kidnapping. Officials say that the purpose of this work was to take stock of the security, so that dangers or disturbances that may occur during rush hours can be identified in advance.
The aim was to maintain security
Officials stressed that being identified by the system does not imply conviction or involvement in a crime during the demonstration. Identification was done on the basis of existing police records, which may include investigations or old cases. Facial recognition system was used during the demonstration as part of tight security arrangements. Police said that the purpose of this technology was to identify wanted people and criminals. It also helped the authorities to keep a better eye on the large crowd.
Increasing dependence on technology
- The use of AI-based surveillance shows that there is a growing reliance on technology to manage crowds and protect people during large gatherings. Officials say that this system helps in faster identification than manual verification and is helpful in measures.
- But the use of facial recognition technology has again increased the concern of those working for people’s rights. He says that this affects people’s privacy and freedom to protest peacefully. Critics believe that strict laws, complete transparency and supervision by an independent organization are very important to keep such biometric surveillance on the demonstrations of the general public.
- Delhi Police says that this technology was used only for security purposes and to prevent any kind of disturbance during the demonstration.
