On Saturday in the World’s Strongest Man (WSM) competition in Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, USA, Rayno Nel delivered a tour of strength that is not afraid of anything and he won all three challenges.

The South African strongman who finished first in his qualifying group currently enjoys a lead of 2.5 points over Canada’s Mitchell Hooper.

In a nutshell, Nel picked up and carried heavy objects several times, while he also threw nine heavy sandbags over the crossbar. In all three items he performed stronger and better than Hooper.

And now, with just a handful of items (“Max Log” and “Atlas Stones”) awaiting Sunday, glory is once again within his reach.

The 30-year-old former pupil of Hoërskool Duineveld on Upington made history last year when he became the first participant outside the USA and Europe to walk away with the overall laurels.

He just has to keep his head down.

Nel’s results in finals:

  • Monster Box Flip and Carry: 27.30 seconds (first)
  • Deadlifts: five repetitions (first)
  • Titan’s Toss: nine sandbags in 39.23 seconds (first)

Finals standings:

  1. Rayno Nel (South Africa): 39 points
  2. Mitchell Hooper (Canada): 36.5 points
  3. Eddie Williams (Australia): 24 points
  4. Mathew Ragg (New Zealand): 21.5 points
  5. Pavlo Kordiyaka (Ukraine): 20 points
  6. Ondrej Fojtu (Czech Republic): 18 points
  7. Martin Licis (Latvia): 18 points
  8. Trey Mitchell (VSA): 16 points
  9. Austin Andrade (Mexico): 12.5 points
  10. Nick Guardione (VSA): 12.5 points
