A fire broke out at the Onder-Sabie rest camp in the Kruger National Park and damaged the camp’s shop. Accommodation and activities are not affected by this.

According to JP Louw, spokesperson for SANParks, the fire was reported early in the morning and rangers and staff acted quickly to put it out before it could spread to other structures. No injuries or deaths were reported.

“The shop at the camp was indeed affected by the fire, while the restaurant did not sustain fire damage. However, the restaurant remains closed for the time being due to power outages caused by the incident. The reception area is also currently not accessible.”

Guests who already have reservations at Onder-Sabie are advised to purchase supplies in advance or make purchases at nearby camps such as Skukuza, Crocodile Bridge, Satara, Tshokwane or Nkuhlu. Temporary retail and refreshment services will be introduced as soon as possible.

Accommodation at the camp remains available and is already fully booked for the coming long weekends. Activities such as guided game drives and walking tours continue as normal.

SANParks requested visitors to stay away from the affected area for the sake of safety.

“The quick action of staff prevented the situation from worsening. Our teams responded quickly and brought the fire under control before it could spread to other structures. Our focus is now on restoring services as soon as possible and ensuring the safety of guests.”

An investigation has since been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
