The Road Traffic Management Corporation has identified high-risk areas in all provinces to step up coordinated, intelligence-led law enforcement operations over the next two long weekends, with traffic volumes expected to increase drastically.
There will also be an increase in police patrols to ensure that motorists obey road rules.
With Independence Day on Monday 27 April and Workers’ Day on Friday 1 May in the same week, an increase in travel – including interprovincial travel – is expected.
This is likely to lead to higher traffic volumes on national routes, increasing the risk of accidents and fatalities.
Key routes expected to experience heavy traffic and congestion include the N1, N2, N3, N4 and R61.
Pedestrians along roads are also expected to increase, especially around the areas where special events are held.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation, pedestrian safety remains a significant source of concern, with accidents involving pedestrians accounting for 43% of road deaths.
“The largest amount of this occurs in Johannesburg, eThekwini, Cape Town, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Nkangala, Bojanala, Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande and Sekhukhune,” the corporation said.
These districts account for approximately 46% of fatal crashes and 44% of pedestrian fatalities. High-risk routes in these areas have been earmarked for targeted enforcement and heightened monitoring.
Authorities will also enforce public transport safe stop zones to discourage operators from dropping off passengers in unsafe areas.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation appeals to motorists to remain patient and vigilant, especially in the vicinity of residential areas and informal settlements.
“Pedestrians are advised not to walk on roads while under the influence of alcohol, to avoid highways, to use pedestrian bridges over busy highways and to wear bright clothing at night,” the statement said.
