The iconic suspension bridge in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park is currently undergoing a major phased renovation project aimed at improving safety and preserving the structure for future generations.

According to South African National Parks (SANParks), the work is expected to be completed by the end of June this year.

The suspension bridge forms part of a 2 km long walking route known for its stable wooden walkways and steps, making it accessible to visitors of all ages.

The bridge, which was originally built in 1969, has been a highlight for tourists for years and offers panoramic views of the Tsitsikamma Forest and the Storms River Gorge.

To minimize disruption, the renovation is being carried out in phases to allow continued access for visitors where possible.

The project includes the demolition and replacement of all superstructures on the three suspension bridges, the rehabilitation of supporting structures and the removal of weakened concrete.

JP Louw, spokesperson for SANParks, says bridges 2 and 3 are currently closed and are expected to reopen on March 23, after which the main suspension bridge will close from March 24 to June 23.

He says full access to all bridges and the walking route will be restored after June 23.

Louw says the phased approach aims to carry out infrastructure upgrades taking into account access to one of the Garden Route’s most celebrated attractions.
