Speculation has begun on the future of the leadership of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, after a delegation led by the Secretary General of the organisation, Mr Fikile Mbalula, visited the province.
A delegation of national ANC leaders also visited KwaZulu-Natal this weekend, where they met with regional leaders.
This team visited the province on the weekend of February 21, where they started by meeting with the interim team leading the ANC in KZN.
What caused speculation about the ANC leaders’ trip was that Mbalula had said that the delegation would be disbanded last month. He said this when he spoke in December, where he expressed his displeasure with the team.
Mbalula complained that the team was failing to do its job and compared it to a Tazz car. The current team has more than 60 members.
Mbalula stated that this team will be disbanded and a smaller team will be appointed.
The ANC’s national spokesperson, Mrs Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, did not want to go public when asked about the future of the leadership of KwaZulu-Natal.
Mrs Bhengu-Motsiri said they have not decided whether the team will be disbanded.
“At the moment we are still listening to the presentations made by the leaders of the ANC in the regions. After listening to the presentations, we will submit a report to be discussed by the committee in charge of the day-to-day operations of the ANC and the executive. Yes, we know that the team’s time is up. We may decide to shorten its time. I wonder if I could just stop it with the topic that the team will be disbanded when there is an opportunity to extend the time.”
The team had been given nine months to organize a conference to elect the leadership of the province and regions.
The team failed to meet the November deadline, and the deadline was extended until this month. The current team is planning to hold leadership selection conferences next month.
But there are rumors that this team will be disbanded before the conferences to choose the leadership and that may delay the conferences.
The source ofOf this country in this organization, he said that the appointment of a new team would mean that the preparations for the conferences should be started from scratch.
“If you look carefully, time has been wasted as there are local government elections this year. The disbanding of the existing team could mean that the conferences will be held after the local government elections. You should start the election campaign soon. The conference can disrupt the election campaign because ANC members argue with each other when there are conferences, the losers tend to boycott the organization.”
