Look | White zebra foal spotted in Sabi Sabi

A rare and striking sighting was recently made in the Sabi Sabi private nature reserve when an almost completely white zebra foal was spotted together with a small herd of plains zebras.

According to the reserve, the foal’s rare appearance can probably be attributed to albinism, a genetic condition where pigment cells do not develop properly. This results in little or no streaks.

“Only a handful of similar cases have been recorded across Africa, which makes this observation special,” the reserve said on social media.

The colt stayed close to his mother and occasionally nudged her playfully as they grazed quietly and moved slowly through the field.

However, the lack of stripes can present challenges.

The reserve says zebras’ characteristic stripes play an important role in camouflage, temperature regulation and warding off biting insects – advantages that this young foal may not have in full.

For now, its greatest protection remains the herd, while the rare phenomenon once again emphasizes the unpredictability – and resilience – of nature, says the reserve in a statement.
