A Gauteng police officer was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the murder of a 25-year-old man from Polokwane.

Phaladi Shuping, spokesperson for the Independent Police Directorate (Opod) says the regional court in Polokwane has const. Senyolo Phetolo, who was stationed at the central police office in Johannesburg, sentenced for the incident on 16 February last year.

“Phetolo was driving with his friends in Polokwane on the day of the incident, when he stopped at the corner of Dahl and Thabo Mbeki streets. A man, known only as Teffu, approached them and asked for money.”

Shuping says an argument arose between Senyolo, Teffu and Phetolo. “One of the passengers handed Teffu money, after which the argument ended and he walked away.”

However, Phetolo got out of his car, approached Teffu, grabbed him by the collar and fired a shot. The bullet hit Teffu from behind and went through his chest. Phetolo got back into his car and drove in the direction of Mokopane.

The incident has been reported to Opod for further investigation. Phetolo was later arrested and charged with murder. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and declared incompetent to own a firearm.
