A police officer accused of corruption, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, was sleeping fully armed, as she was found with two guns in bed when she was arrested. Nkosi was found hiding a gun under the bed and another on the mattress when he was arrested by the police last week. He had kept four other guns in a safe, one was found in the car.

He appeared briefly in the Magistrate’s Court in Pretoria, yesterday. He is charged with violating the laws governing the storage of firearms and ammunition and obstructing the operation of the law.

Nkosi’s case has been postponed to next Monday, when he will apply for bail.

The police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said Nkosi was found guilty of armed robbery and carjacking. Five booths are original, one is a copy.

Brigadier Mathe said the boxes were found in a shack at Nkosi’s house.

“All these cases were closed because there was nothing to be found. The investigation will look at whether the suspect did not contribute to the closing of the cases. These documents should not have been kept in the police stations. The police will investigate how they got to him.”

Brigadier Mathe said they also found a pile of money at Nkosi’s house.

Nkosi wanted his bail application to be heard yesterday but the State asked for time to complete the investigation. Nkosi’s lawyers wanted him to be released yesterday, complaining that he is not safe in prison. They said Nkosi does not eat in prison for fear that he will be poisoned.

They also wanted him to be transferred to another prison as he is kept in Kgosi Mampuru II, but the magistrate rejected that request.

The media were not allowed to photograph Nkosi when he appeared in court.

Nkosi is accused of being a member of a group of people suspected of being gangsters, among whom are the businessmen facing charges, Mr. Vusumuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, and Mr. Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe. During the proceedings of the Commission led by Judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga, it was revealed that Nkosi was receiving money from Matlala.

Nkosi works for the organized crime unit and is close to the suspended Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya.
