A South African student at Coventry University in Britain walked away with the laurels this year as the young designer of the year with his open-plan yacht design in the BOAT International competition.

Finn Lortan, who studies vehicle and transport design, was praised for the quality and fine detail of his designs by a panel of judges who are themselves award-winning yacht designers.

The competition assignment was to design a 60 m yacht that can accommodate 20 guests. It should include two family cabins and extensive entertainment facilities.

More than 160 young designers entered the competition.

Lortan says his most important part of his design was to make the entertainment section large enough so that it has room for large groups in one large space, rather than spreading guests over a number of floors. He also designed a spa and open-plan lounge area that folds out to save space and accommodate more people in one space.

“Another requirement was to design a cabin for the owner of the yacht. This cabin had to be designed in such a way that there is always a sea view. The end result was the owner’s cabin on the upper deck, positioned on a gyro floor system to ensure that it remains stable.”

Lortan says he is delighted to have won the competition and it is special for him to see his yacht design exhibited internationally.

The young man says he “fell in love” with the idea of designing boats and yachts when he completed sailor training and during his first internship at Du Toit Yacht Design in Cape Town.

“My studies at Coventry University gave me the opportunity to connect and build relationships with designers in the industry. It is my dream to design yachts and I am grateful for this platform.”
