A collision at the intersection of Steve Biko Road and Booysen Street in Pretoria during an alleged speeding race claimed the life of one person and left several people seriously injured on Sunday evening.

According to Capt. Johan van Dyk, police spokesman, said a Honda Ballade and a Renault Kwid were involved in the accident. The Honda was driving in a northerly direction in Steve Bikoweg when the Renault approached the intersection from Booysenstraat.

“It is alleged that the driver of the Renault Kwid failed to obey a stop sign” and then collided with the Honda, says Van Dyk.

After the collision, the Honda Ballade left the road and “crashed into a lamp post”.

Paramedics took the injured to a nearby hospital. The passenger of the Honda Ballade was later pronounced dead in hospital, while both drivers sustained serious injuries and are receiving further treatment.

The two men in the Honda were identified as Willie Momberg and Phillip Bezuidenhout.

According to reports, Bezuidenhout was pronounced dead on Sunday evening, while Momberg sustained critical injuries. He is currently being treated in an intensive care unit.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
