A Christian organization representing thousands of churches is calling on believers all over South Africa to stand together in prayer for the country at Easter.

The South African Community of Faith-Based Brotherhoods and Federations (Sacoff) says the country faces serious social and economic challenges, and that prayer can play a role in restoring communities and promoting hope.

According to pastor Bert Pretorius, president of Sacoff, Easter is not only a time of reflection, but also an opportunity for believers to intercede for the future of South Africa.

“We appeal to believers to pray together for a country where hope, recovery and responsible leadership become visible again.”

Sacoff points out that issues such as crime, gender-based violence, corruption and economic pressure continue to pose major challenges for South Africans.

The organization says that prayer is directed at, among other things:

  • ethical and accountable leadership
  • economic growth and job creation
  • safer communities
  • stronger families
  • the development of young people

Emphasis is also placed on unity and cooperation between South Africans in the midst of existing divisions.

Sacoff encourages churches, faith leaders and individuals to actively participate in the prayer initiative and to not only pray, but also become practically involved in their communities.

Pretorius says the organization believes that faith communities can play a role in positive change.

“When believers come together in prayer and action, it can make a difference in communities right across the country.”

Sacoff is an umbrella body that represents thousands of churches and faith organizations nationwide. The organization focuses on cooperation between faith groups and involvement in social and community issues. The organization says its aim is to contribute to moral and social recovery through collaboration with various role players in society.
