A 58-year-old director of a private security company that focuses on anti-poaching and rhino protection, died this week after being mauled by a black rhino.
The incident happened at the Samara Karoo Reserve south of Graaff-Reinet while Schoeman van Jaarsveld was busy with anti-poaching activities.
According to the Mossel Bay Advertiser, the incident happened on Thursday morning at 10:30 and Van Jaarsveld was pronounced dead at the scene.
The reserve, Van Jaarsveld’s family and Milk River Security issued a joint statement and confirmed his death.
According to the statement, Van Jaarsveld and his team’s work was of inestimable value in the protection of wildlife, especially rhinos, in this region.
“He will be greatly missed and we express our deepest condolences to his family and team.”
