A man was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning in Windermere in the Western Cape after he apparently fired shots in this residential area.

According to JP Smith, mayoral committee member for community safety in Cape Town, the police were called after they apparently received calls.

Once there, they spotted the suspect apparently trying to flee the scene. The officers chased him.

The suspect was later arrested and a firearm from which the serial number had been removed was found in his possession.

Smith says the increasing violence in many communities is attributed to the massive growth in gang activity caused by the leadership vacuum left behind after the arrest of several key figures.

“The battle for the area of operation has resulted in the previously structured hierarchy being fragmented into more than an estimated 180 individual gang groups. With an increased supply of drugs and firearms in these groups, a dedicated, effective police investigative task force was urgently called in. These calls have been repeatedly ignored.”

He goes on to say that the information now emerging from the Magadla Commission confirms the City’s previous suspicion that “senior members of the police and political structures are involved” and pursue profit in these areas of organized crime.

“Our promise remains the same. The City of Cape Town already has the investigative capability and only needs the outstanding authority. Our investigations and resulting prosecution will take place without prejudice, regardless of how high up the chain it may lead. No fear. No favor,” says Smith.
