Sunday’s Betway Premiership match against TS Galaxy will give Kaizer Chiefs player, Lebohang Maboe, the opportunity to continue making things happen for this Soweto team.

Maboe (31) played a major role in the last three matches of the Betway Premiership, and was even named as the best player on the field.

In those games, Amakhosi collected total points by defeating Durban City 1-0, Magesi 2-0 and Orbit College 3-1.

In total, Maboe has been named the best player in four league games this season.

The player who has done this more than him is Orlando Pirates winger, Relebohile Mofokeng, who was named as the best player in the league before Friday night’s match against Richards Bay FC.

Although Maboe’s form has benefited the players who play alongside him, including Wandile Duba, Mduduzi Shabalala, Siphesihle Ndlovu and others, he also praised his teammates for highlighting him.

“Although I am the one who accepted this award, all this is due to the hard work of the team. We were helping each other and doing things with the same goal,” said Maboe in an interview with SuperSport after the recent match against Orbit.

This is Maboe’s second time playing for Chiefs as he ran in the club’s nursery when he was young under the team’s legendary coaches, Johannes ‘Ryder’ Mofokeng and Arthur ‘10111’ Zwane.

In 2015 he started playing professional football in the second division, now called the Motsepe Foundation Championship, playing for Mbombela United.

He was signed by Maritzburg United in 2016, where he played in the top division until 2018. He then moved to Mamelodi Sundowns where he won a number of league titles, other domestic cups and the African Football League title.

At Sundowns, he was interrupted by a knee injury but returned after a long time without playing. In January last year, he was loaned to SuperSport United, before being released by the Mamelodi club at the end of the 2024/25 season.

He joined the Chiefs in August, and he had to fight for the jersey as he is now a fan favourite.

He is the son of one who made a name for himself in local football, Sidwell Maboe, who played for Bloemfontein Celtic, Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu, Free State Stars, Wits University and SuperSport.

Maboe’s form will be important for Makhosi as he continues the campaign to collect points that will help them finish in a good place in the Betway Premiership log.

They are currently in third place with 39 points from 21 games. The next match he will play against TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium, Nasrec, on Sunday at 3 pm.

One of the Chiefs midfielders, Siphesihle Ndlovu, sees this game as important as they strive to finish in the Top 3 to play in one of the Caf competitions next season.

“At this time of the season it is very difficult to predict because each team is playing for something. Our game against Galaxy will be at a high level. We just need to prepare well and continue the winning streak. That is what we need at this time to finish in a good place on the log,” said Ndlovu.

Betway Premiership games this weekend

Saturday: Lamontville Golden Arrows v Durban City (King Zwelithini Stadium, 3pm); Siwelele v AmaZulu FC (Dr Molemela Stadium, 3pm); Sekhukhune United v Magesi FC (Peter Mokaba Stadium, 5.30pm); Chippa United v Polokwane City (Buffalo Stadium, 8pm).

On Sunday: Kaizer Chiefs v TS Galaxy (FNB Stadium, 3pm); Gallant Spears v Orbit College
