The DA in Knysna will request the Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Anton Bredell, to intervene urgently in the midst of an intensifying water crisis which is believed to be caused by poor maintenance of infrastructure.

According to Levael Davis, the DA’s mayoral candidate in Knysna, the ANC-controlled municipality’s handling of water pumps and related infrastructure is a core problem that undermines the town’s water security.

“The failure to properly maintain and operate pumps means that Knysna cannot efficiently transfer water from its river system to the main dam – even when there is good rainfall,” says Davis.

He emphasizes that access to water is a basic right and that the expertise of the Western Cape government must be used to rectify the situation.

Although recent rainfall has brought relief, Davis warns that it does not solve the underlying problems.

“Rain alone will not solve this crisis. Without functional and well-maintained infrastructure, we will continue to lose opportunities to build up water reserves.”

Flooding and drainage also a source of concern

The DA is also concerned about the condition of storm water drains in the town. According to Davis, the lack of maintenance has already led to preventable flooding.

“Failure to keep drains clean has caused certain areas to flood, damaging roads and putting further pressure on municipal resources. Regular maintenance is non-negotiable if we want to limit flood risks.”

Davis points out that during their reign the DA upgraded the Charlesford water scheme, significantly boosting Knysna’s water capacity.

“That investment made a huge difference, but its value has since been eroded by neglect.”

Davis says the DA is committed to reversing the decline and bringing infrastructure back up to standard.

“We will ensure that Knysna’s water systems are repaired, properly maintained and managed with the necessary urgency. Maintenance and forward planning will be a top priority under a DA control. Knysna’s residents deserve reliable management and practical solutions. The DA stands ready to deliver this and put the town back on a path of long-term water security.”
