The huge fuel levy, which is expected to come into effect at midnight on Tuesday, will be R3 per liter less, after the government decided to cut the fuel levy by this amount.

Enoch Godongwana, Minister of Finance, made this announcement on Tuesday at an investment conference in Johannesburg. This was confirmed in an official statement shortly afterwards.

“I am going to temporarily lower the fuel levy by R3 for April and then we will discuss further what we can do over the next two months,” said Godongwana.

Maroela Media reported earlier that the price of petrol and diesel is likely to rise by more than R5 and R10 per litre, respectively.

The DA already asked last week that fuel charges be cut by 50% for the duration of the fuel crisis, or as long as possible, in order to provide relief from R3.17 per liter of petrol.

Dr. Mark Burke, DA MP and the party’s spokesperson on finance, previously said Namibia, Australia, Spain, Portugal, Vietnam and Brazil have all recently announced various forms of fuel tax relief.

Some of the countries, including Australia, have in fact implemented the exact relief that the DA proposed.
