The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has condemned the incident of violence between two schoolgirls recorded on video in Bilanyoni township, Dumbe.

Iincidents like these threaten the safety and future of students. The Minister of Education in KZN, Sipho Hlomuka, has expressed concern about the fight involving students from Kanyekanye High School and Kwasa High School. He described the video of the incident that has spread on social media as very disturbing and unacceptable.

He is very concerned about reports that similar incidents have been going on, as there are allegations that some members of the community are not only watching but encouraging violence.

“These acts of violence have the power to destroy the life and future of young people,” said Hlomuka. He added that schools must always be safe places for learning and teaching. “We will not allow the culture of violence to gain strength in our communities and spread to our schools.”
