National police, the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape government have struck an agreement to get more boots on the ground in a bid to fight crime in the province. The signing of the memorandum comes at a critical time following the release of the national crime stats. The Western Cape consistently saw the sharpest increase in murders for the first half of the year. In the first three months of the year, the province saw a 27.5% increase. Three people were killed and an 11-year-old girl injured by crossfire during a shooting in Mpumalanga township, west of Durban, on Friday. According to the ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the incident took place just before midday.
