The latest reports on the internet have scared everyone regarding the security of biometric data. According to experts, if someone takes a photo of you in which your fingers are towards the camera and the distance is 5 feet or less, then hackers can create an exact digital clone of your fingerprint from that photo.
This was not possible with the blurry photographs of earlier times. However, today’s modern cameras and AI tools can read the smallest details hidden in photos and clean them. Due to this, there remains a possibility of your biometric data being stolen.
This work is not being done for the first time
It is worth noting that the idea of stealing fingerprints from photographs is not new. In 2014, a German researcher had created a copy of the fingerprint of the German Defense Minister using ordinary photographs. Similarly, in the year 2021, some researchers had tricked the biometric scanner with the help of a normal photograph, glue and Photoshop.
Now AI has made this work even easier. However, even after this, companies like Apple, Google and Samsung use fingerprint because it is easier and faster for users to use than passwords. According to reports, hackers can even drain people’s bank accounts by stealing biometric details from photographs. (Ref.)
How to keep yourself safe?
- To protect your fingerprints from falling into the hands of hackers, stop posing with the peace sign or showing hands in your photos.
- Apart from this, keep the side with fingerprint towards you instead of the camera.
- Don’t expose your fingers to the camera in close-up shots.
- To protect important apps and bank accounts, do not rely solely on fingerprints, but use secondary PINs or codes.
