Sridhar Vembu on AI: Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has asked students not to depend too much on AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. He believes that students who rely too much on AI are weakening their basic understanding and skills.

Sridhar Vembu’s warning to students
Zoho Founder Sridhar Vembu: With the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI), students are able to solve problems faster than ever, write assignments and prepare for exams in a better way. But Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu says that this facility may have a price, which is still hidden from everyone. Recently, reacting to the news that a large number of students failed the computer science course at UC Berkeley, Vembu said that students who rely too much on AI can weaken the very skills they are trying to develop. This warning of Vembu to the students is pointing towards the crisis to come.

First the foundation should be strengthened

AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are being increasingly used in classrooms and teaching-learning routines. These platforms may provide immediate answers and explanations, but Vembu believes that students should develop and strengthen the basics before becoming too dependent on them. Vembu tweeted from his official

When to use AI?

  • Sridhar Vembu also said in his post that until school and college students learn the basics of AI properly, he would not encourage them to adopt AI very soon.
  • Vembu’s warning came after a report by ‘The Daily Californian’. The report found unusually high failure rates in several computer science courses at UC Berkeley during the Spring 2026 semester.
  • According to the report, 35.3 percent students failed in CS 10 and 10.6 percent failed in CS 61A. These figures were much higher than in previous years, when the failure rate was generally less than 10 percent.

Gave warning earlier also

This is not the first time that Vembu has warned about AI. Earlier, he had talked about research which showed that even though AI can improve short-term performance, it can harm long-term learning.
