Three suspects were arrested after they were found with ten suspected stolen cattle in their possession.

Majang Skalkie, police spokesperson, says members of provincial intelligence received information in the early hours of Thursday about a white Isuzu bakkie with a trailer in the Derby-Ventersdorp area.

“The information was followed up and investigations revealed that the vehicle was loaded with cattle and was traveling in the direction of Parys in the Free State,” says Skalkie.

According to her, all relevant role players were immediately deployed, including members of the police in Paris. Community members also helped with the operation.

“The suspects were intercepted and it was established that they were in possession of ten cattle. However, they could not provide proof of ownership or give a satisfactory explanation as to how they came into possession of the cattle.

“They were consequently arrested for possessing suspected stolen livestock,” says Skalkie.

Wipe returned to rightful owner

Further investigations positively linked the three suspects to a livestock theft case that was reported earlier in Potchefstroom.

“The investigation confirmed that the cattle were presumably stolen in a case that had already been reported to the police. The cattle were later returned to the rightful owner,” says Skalkie.

The three suspects, aged between 20 and 40, are expected to appear in the Magistrate’s Court in Paris on Monday on charges related to the possession of suspected stolen property.

Skalkie says the investigation continues and further charges may follow as the investigation progresses.

‘Cooperation remains essential’

Maj. Gen. Ryno Naidoo, acting provincial commissioner of the North West, meanwhile thanked those involved for their quick action and cooperation.

“The cooperation between the community and the police remains crucial in the fight against crime. This successful operation shows what can be achieved when different players work together to ensure that justice is done,” says Naidoo.

He also praised the dedication of the police officers and others involved.

“The quick response and dedicated actions of all the members and stakeholders involved in the operation deserve recognition. Such cooperation plays a major role in curbing crime and returning stolen property to victims,” said Naidoo.
