One of the 12 police officers who appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning is Brigadier Rachel Matjeng, who said she and Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala were in love and he was her blesser.

Testifying before the Madlanga Commission in February, Matjeng said there was no money Matlala gave him as a bribe to get the R360 million police contract.

He said he wooed her with gifts including Ozempic (an expensive weight loss drug). Asked about the R300 000 he received from Matlala, he told the commission that it had nothing to do with his work.

The 12 officers were arrested when they were caught by the IDAC corruption investigation unit on Tuesday night for allegedly helping Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, in obtaining an illegal tender.

They are facing charges of fraud, money laundering, tender manipulation and violating the Finance Act.

The deceased were General Busi Temba, Brigadier Ofentse Tlhoaele, Brigadier Kistey Jonker, Brigadier Thembinkosi Ngema, Colonel Nehemiah Maleka, Colonel Johannes Monyai, Captain Brian Catwright, Colonel Anthony Paulsen Osewathatha and Brigadier Rachel Mathansi.
