The Durbanville community was plunged into mourning after the death of Jean-Luc Olivier (18), a matric student at Durbanville High School, after a motorcycle accident on Sunday in Brackenfell.
Sgt. Wesley Twigg, police spokesperson, says the incident took place at 14:10 at the corner of Jacaranda Street and Bottelary Road when a motorcycle and a bakkie collided. Jean-Luc was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The Brackenfell police have opened a case of culpable homicide after a collision on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of an 18-year-old boy. According to reports, a Toyota bakkie and a motorcycle collided with each other. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated and no arrests have been made,” said Twigg.
The police also appealed to the public to come forward if they have any information about the collision.
“Anyone with information about this incident can call the Stop Crime number on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app.”
Condolences are pouring in
Coenie Venter, principal of Durbanville High School, expressed his condolences and emphasized the void left by Olivier’s death.
“It is with sadness that Durbanville High School says goodbye to Jean-Luc Olivier today. Words are few, our tears are shallow and we have no answers. We express our deepest condolences to his family, relatives and friends. May our Lord comfort everyone.
“We honor his life and his contribution to our school. Farewell until we see Jean-Luc again. For now we will remember and long,” Venter said.
The school community of the DF Malan High School was also deeply affected by the news, especially because Jean-Luc’s brother, Emile, was a matric student at this school in 2024.
“Dear Durbanville High School community, our hearts ache so much with you. This type of loss is something one hopes to never experience as a school. We carry you in our hearts and prayers. May the Comforter hold you, dry your tears and give you peace that surpasses all understanding. Good luck to every member of staff, learners and wider community. We pray for you.”
The school also specifically reached out to their own learners who knew Jean-Luc.
“We also think especially of our DF community who knew and loved Jean-Luc and in particular of his family and his little brother, Emile Olivier.”
