Regardless of how some people may perceive such a move, Bulls mentor Jake White has decided to give his three World Cup-winning Springboks their compulsory rest period now, despite a make-or-break fortnight in the European Champions Cup.
None of Kurt-Lee Arendse, Canan Moodie and Marco van Staden will be seen in a blue jersey until 17 February – Willie le Roux is also an absentee, though his window will be different – prompting question marks over whether the former Springbok coach has drawn a line in the sand as to whether he’s preferring a tilt at the URC title rather than continental glory.
Following the World Cup victory in France, SA Rugby decreed that national players had to be granted a five-week hiatus to manage their respective workloads, which was in keeping with last year’s arrangement as well.
