“Where are we supposed to go? We’ve been living in this area for more than 50 years now,” said residents of Shelley Road in Salt River, Cape Town, who received notices from the City of Cape Town on 26 June that their tenancies and leases might be terminated.

Farieda Benting, a 64-year-old mother of two living at 20 Shelley Road, Salt River, said she received a notice from the City instructing her to vacate her house by 31 July 2024.

Benting said she applied for a subsidy but received no assistance.
