The Western Cape government has already spent around R15 million fighting wildfires.
There have been close to 3 840 wildfires in the Western Cape since the start of December – and extinguishing them has almost depleted the provincial government’s R16-million firefighting budget.
Wouter Kriel, spokesperson for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning MEC Anton Bredell, said the provincial government had already spent around R15 million fighting the wildfires.
News24 previously reported that R16 million had been set aside to fight wildfires in the Western Cape, with more than 7 000 wildfires anticipated for the summer season.
