Fadiel Adams, leader of the National Colored Congress (NCC) and a member of parliament, will have to spend the weekend behind bars in KwaZulu-Natal.
Adams appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates Court on Thursday morning on two counts of obstruction of justice and three counts of fraud.
The case was adjourned until Wednesday (May 13).
Adams will then make a formal application for bail, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, spokeswoman for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), confirmed to Maroela Media by telephone on Thursday afternoon.
He has been in custody since Tuesday.
Adams was handcuffed at his home in the Pelican Park parliamentary village on Tuesday afternoon shortly after the police’s task force for political murders appealed to Adams to report to the nearest police station.
Adams is accused of interfering with the police investigation into the assassination of Sindiso Magaqa at the time. Magaqa, a former secretary-general of the ANC’s youth league, died in September 2017 after being shot in Umzimkhulu in KwaZulu-Natal in July that year.
