With the comments in the build-up to the Springboks’ two-match Test series against Ireland having been a touch on the inflammatory side – albeit unintentionally – Grant Williams sought to tone things down with the first match imminent on Saturday.

Quite what has whipped up the recent and fervent rivalry between the Springboks and Ireland is unclear: it could be that they were the big dogs in the group of death at last year’s World Cup, the fact that the Boks haven’t beaten Ireland since 2016, or the fact that the two sides are now ranked first (South Africa) and second in the world rankings.
