Boitumelong Senior Secondary School in Tembisa ended 2023 on a high note.
The school’s under-15 netball team had an incredible season, placing fourth at Singapore’s 2023 International Youth Netball Challenge in November.
This is a significant feat for a school that often has a shortage of sports resources.
“The experience was so nice … the girls really fought. They pushed so hard using the skills that they had,” team coach Dorcus Mlangeni told News24.
Mlangeni’s team competed against seven other teams from Australia, China and Malaysia.

Rising star Mbalenhle Mvundla, who plays centre, said participating in an international tournament tested the team’s endurance and grip.
“I learnt how to persevere, how not to give up.”
She said Mlangeni’s encouragement and support made even some of the more challenging games easier.
“Every day, she would tell us, ‘We are bold and strong’.”
Not one to let success slow their momentum, Mlangeni had the girls back on the court shortly after touching down at OR Tambo International Airport.
“Next year [we are] definitely [taking] first place. We have grown. We have seen the level of competition … even the girls are more motivated now.”
