An Intercape long-distance bus went up in flames near the Cape Town train station as commuters were making their way to various public transport services during the busy peak hour traffic on Friday afternoon.

Thick black smoke could be seen lingering in the air as commuters stood in disbelief during the incident.

The spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s fire service department, Jermaine Carelse, said teams were alerted that a bus had caught fire near the Cape Town train station just after 15:00.

Crews from Roeland Street, Brooklyn and Salt River responded.
