A much-loved Cape Town market is battling to fight off a public scandal after a video was circulated widely online at the weekend.

The video depicts a group of patrons at a table, with one of the men using a bank card to line up a white substance into five rows.

“I simply found the behaviour disturbing as the establishment is family-friendly, ” an eyewitness, Kiki Ngubelanga, told News24.

Ngubelanga was at Mojo Market in Sea Point, hoping to satisfy her midday hunger with some Asian cuisine.

But she got more than what she’d ordered.

From her table, she saw one of the men snorting a white powdered line.

“No matter the substance, that behaviour is wrong because what is it teaching kids?”

As a frequent visitor to the market, Ngubelanga said she’d always had a wholesome experience.

“Whenever I’m there, there’s always kids around. Even on that day of the incident, a family with kids sat where those men were after they left.”

The substance in question is still unidentified, but the matter is under investigation.

The owner of Mojo Market, Graeme Robinson, said there was a “zero tolerance” approach to any illegal behaviour.

He said the incident could be attributed to “a prank, a smear campaign, or an attempt to generate [online] engagement, using clickbait”.

Robinson said the ordeal had cast a grey cloud over his establishment.

“It would be useful to appeal to these jokers to come forward to clear themselves firstly of any wrongdoing or criminal activity.”
