Two suspects were arrested on Friday after they apparently tampered with visitors’ vehicles in the parking area at Cape Point. The car park is located in the southern part of the Table Mountain National Parks.

According to JP Louw, communications manager of SANParks, rangers acted quickly after suspicious activity was reported in the area.

When the rangers arrived at the scene, the suspects apparently tried to flee in a gray BMW hatchback vehicle.

SANParks rangers immediately started a pursuit and eventually caught up with the vehicle at the Olifantsbos parking area.

According to SANParks, the device was probably used to prevent vehicles from locking properly.

“A search of the suspects and their vehicle yielded a remote-controlled signal blocker, which was presumably used to interfere with visitors’ vehicle locking systems,” says Louw.

It is suspected that the device was used to disable the locking systems of visitors’ cars.

The two individuals were then handed over to the police in Simonstad for arrest and further processing of the case.

SANParks confirmed that the incident took place in the Cape Point parking area, a popular destination for local and international tourists in the Table Mountain National Park.
