- A taxi accident in the Eastern Cape has resulted in five deaths.
- Among the victims was a two-month-old infant.
- 12 other people were injured in the crash.
Five people were killed and 12 others injured when a minibus taxi in which they were travelling overturned near Libode in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.
The accident happened on a gravel road in Mgwenyane.
Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said that the vehicle was fully loaded and travelling from Mthatha to Majola location, passing Mgwenyane location.
“The driver lost control and it overturned,” he said.
“It is believed that brake failure contributed to the crash as it is said to have reversed in hilly terrain.”

Among the victims were two children, the youngest of which was only two-months-old, he added.
“Three other passengers sustained severe injuries, while nine others, including the driver, escaped with minor injuries,” Binqose said.
A culpable homicide was opened at the Libode police station.
The accident comes after a deadly week on the country’s roads.
Several accidents in KwaZulu-Natal claimed the lives of 23 people.
In addition, five people were killed in a bus accident in Limpopo – the second fatal bus accident in the province in a week.
