Two dead after Rovos Rail derailment

Two people have died after the luxury Rovos Rail passenger train derailed in Namibia.

According to Rovos Rail, the train was traveling south from Windhoek at 04:45 on Sunday when it derailed at Naute, approximately 285 km before Ariamsvlei and the South African border.

“The cause was a final bridge tension that washed away and resulted in the loss of two locomotives and two utility wagons. The automatic braking system brought the train to a halt to prevent further damage.”

A Rovos Rail driver and a TransNamib employee were killed in the accident. “We express our deepest condolences to their families, friends and colleagues.”

No passengers or other Rovos Rail staff were injured during the incident. Buses have been arranged to transport guests to Upington from where they will be flown to Cape Town.

“We sincerely regret this incident, but rest assured, the safety and well-being of our guests and staff is of the utmost importance.”

Desmond van Jaarsveld, CEO of TransNamib, said an investigation is being carried out into the exact cause of the incident.

“We are fully cooperating with the authorities, and once finalized, stakeholders will be notified, and appropriate measures will be implemented to prevent any recurrence.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives. Our thoughts remain with all those affected at this extremely difficult time,” Van Jaarsveld said.
