The Competition Commission has decided to refer its findings on price fixing in the number plate industry to the Competition Tribunal for a final order.

The DA says it welcomes this decision.

Mlondi Mdluli, the DA’s deputy spokesperson for trade, industry and competition, says the companies involved in this case and which produce plates without numbers on them, have allegedly established fixed prices and trading conditions since June 2023. “This raises prices for South Africans, undermines competition and prevents new businesses from entering the license plate industry. The companies also allegedly added an additional amount of R10 to all license plates sold in KwaZulu-Natal.

“This reference (to the tribunal) came after sustained pressure by the DA.”

Mdluli says the party was in discussion with the Competition Commission from July 2025 to bring to light its serious concerns about alleged anti-competitive behavior in the sector. “We are assured that the matter would have been concluded by December 2025. When the deadline expired, a further commitment was given that the finalization would be done by the end of February.”

He says that despite the delays, the DA exerted sustained pressure to ensure that the case is not abandoned. “We are therefore encouraged that the commission acted and referred the matter to the tribunal.”

Mdluli believes this is a clear indication that sustained parliamentary oversight is producing results, and says it represents a tangible victory in the party’s ongoing struggle to protect consumers, support fair competition and promote inclusive economic participation.

He says the DA will continue to monitor the tribunal proceedings to ensure the case is pursued with the urgency and seriousness it deserves. “Those found guilty must bear the legal consequences, including appropriate penalties, to prevent collusion in the future and restore integrity to the market.”
