Three men were arrested on charges of attempted murder after a traffic officer was shot on the N7 between Klawer and Clanwilliam on Thursday evening.

Maroela Media earlier reported that the incident took place around 19:00 near Paddavlei.

The Western Cape Department of Mobility identified the officer as Inspector Bradley Beukes of the Vredendal Provincial Traffic Centre.

According to the department, Beukes stopped a motorist on suspicion of drunk driving.

Sgt. Wesley Twigg, spokesperson for the police, says the motorist did not want to cooperate. “The suspect produced a firearm and shot the traffic officer before fleeing the scene.”

Beukes was able to call for help on his mobile phone and a colleague arranged emergency assistance.

“We are thinking of his family and colleagues and wish him a speedy recovery,” adds the department. “We appreciate the bravery and dedication of Inspector Beukes and all our traffic officers who put their own lives on the line every day to keep our roads safe.”

Twigg says the men will appear in the Klawer Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
