On Thursday, the 19th, the High Court of Pietermaritzburg sentenced Andile Wonderboy Ngcobo, Andile Sabelo Shezi and Mongezi Nyathi to 14 years in prison and 121 years in prison.
This follows that the three were found guilty of exterminating the Khumalo family in Plessislaer between October 2021 and October 2022. The attack of the three began when they robbed a man of his gun in Pietermaritzburg on 3 October 2021. Two weeks later three Khumalo brothers were shot at Mbali Unit J in Plessislaer. Two of the brothers died at the scene and one survived.
Detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit personally handled the investigation and arrested Ngcobo, Shezi and Nyathi for possession of three guns.
Ballistic reports link the guns to the killing of two Khumalo brothers and they were charged with murder. As the trial continued, the third victim of the Khumalo brothers who survived was attacked with a friend and shot dead.
A day later the boys from Khumalo were shot, the suspects returned to the family and killed the parents of the brothers. This is said to be done to eliminate witnesses. They did not stop there because they killed another witness who was the sister of the Khumalo brothers. He was attacked at a party in an incident where three people were shot dead in Maqeleni in Mbali Unit J. The investigation linked Ngcobo, Shezi and Nyathi to ten (10) cases of murder among others, including attempted murder, robbery using brutality and possession of illegal firearms.
