Four men suspected of being criminals were shot dead and two were arrested following a shootout with the police in Soweto, Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Hawks spokesperson in Gauteng, Colonel Katlego Mogale, said the incident happened after the intelligence unit at the Modus Operandi Center revealed that there was a group planning to rob a business at Kwezi station, Mofolo. Mogale said a multi-agency team including members of the Hawks Tactical Operation Management Section, Badboyz Security, and the Gauteng Highway Patrol followed the report and identified the vehicles that the suspects were said to be driving near the buildings they were targeting.
“The team followed the vehicles that were described near the place where the robbery was going to take place. According to the police, the suspects got separated when they fled in their two cars, the police chased them.
“When the suspects were being chased, there was a shootout, four suspects were injured and two were arrested,” said Mogale.
The arrested suspects are expected to face charges including business robbery, attempted murder, and possession of illegal firearms. Mogale added that the search is on for the seventh suspect who fled on foot during the chase.
