THEY WANT Sicathamiya music to be open to many people who are organizing a concert called Sicathamiya Concert which will be held at the Playhouse, Durban, on May 30.

This is the second time this event has been held, as last year it was held in the same month.

The leader of the group Zulu Messengers, Sikhumbuzo “Mavulakuvale” Mhlongo, said that they started the concert last year with the aim of changing the way the cathamiya is viewed.

“We wanted the cathamiya to be performed like other musicals because it is always held in competition. For the first event we wanted to see if it was possible, luckily it was successful. The Playhouse then committed itself to not returning because people love it,” said Mavulakuvale.

He said that Ucotoza – which is also known as the night – has become popular because it is played at night and there are also groups competing, he said that is why the event starts at 2 in the afternoon to change that and attract more people.

“As an effort to attract the younger gang, we would like our games not only to be held at night but also during the day so that they will be there and love it. There is another one we are organizing in Glebe soon because we want the younger gang to see it and continue with it because at night they don’t have time to be there. We are always trying to change the idea that it should only be met at night.”

He said that at the Playhouse concert they changed things by combining old and new groups. Also included are Pomeroy Golden Stars, Zulu Messengers, Royal Messengers, Inkululeko, Kalabhayi Boy, Ben 10, Mlazi Temendous and others.

He said the issue does not interfere with the Playhouse’s comedy competition in September.

“Tickets are still available and available for R100. You can even get it from the teams that will be playing and that will help you because it will probably increase to R150 on Monday,” said Mavulakuvale.

Tickets are also on sale at Webticket.
