The station managers who have been in charge of the police stations for the last three years have continued to do poorly in the crime reduction programs, they should smell their armpits.

These are the words of the Acting Commissioner of Police in the province, Major General Phumelele Makoba, who was speaking to a large number of stations in an accountability session at the Durban Christian Center Jesus Dome, in Mayville, Durban.

Makoba said: “If you are a station operator, sitting here, your station has been declining for the past three years, the question you should ask yourself is whether you like your job or not.”

He said that the stations that lead the stations that have that problem, should ask themselves if they still deserve to be public servants.

“We agree, no one does well all the time, but we must always be hungry to make sure that our people are safe, and we must give them reasons to trust us,” he said.

In this meeting there were stations, district commissioners, heads of the province, commanders of Visible Policing, Detective Commanders, Support Heads, Unit Commanders as well as Commissioned officers of the province.

He reminded them that they are trusted with the safety of the residents of the province, and said that they should supervise the areas rented by their stations properly.

“If you fail to manage properly, you as the station manager are blamed. If the public is not satisfied with the performance of the police, the first person to blame is the station manager,” he said.

He said the public already knows that the station is managed by its manager and therefore expects him to behave appropriately.

In this meeting, the stations were to present a report on the performance of their stations and then come up with strategies on how to fix where they are lagging.
