Bafana Bafana don’t know their place in international football.
Put them on a stage and they will strut their stuff with the confidence of a runway model while unknowingly wearing less. They are the classic example of the vain emperor who was duped into spending a fortune for a fine suit that turned out to not exist. Instead, that emperor walked around town in their birthday suit with the belief that they were wearing something special.
For the longest time, Bafana have also waddled around naked with the belief that they were wearing the finest suit around – buoyed by the gold that glistened on their head when they were crowned the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) champions and with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) being the most lucrative league on the continent.
