The former premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr. Willies Mchunu, will win the MKP campaign for local government elections in the province.

Mchunu has been appointed to be the coordinator of the team that will lead the MKP election campaign in KwaZulu-Natal.

The appointment of the team was announced by the General Secretary of MKP, Mr. Sibonelo Nomvalo. The team was appointed after the dissolution of the provincial leadership. Mchunu had been the organizer of the disbanded leadership.

Most of the leaders who were part of the disbanded team have been appointed to the team that will lead the election campaign.

Among the leaders who have been appointed to the team that will lead the election campaign, are Mr. Simphiwe Mpungose and the Chief of Staff, Mr. Gobizizwe Makhanya, who were already part of the disbanded team.

Nomvalo said the team was appointed after the regional meetings held last week.

In these meetings held in all regions of KwaZulu-Natal, the names of people who will be part of the election campaign were suggested.

Nomvalo said that they will soon announce who will lead the campaign of the party in the regions, he announced who will lead the MKP campaign in Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces.

“We will announce the leadership of the remaining five states and regions in the next few weeks.”

Nomvalo said they will make changes in the leadership if necessary.

“The team that will lead the election campaign in the province will have 22 people. We will make changes in the teams if we see that there is a need for us to change.”

Nomvalo said that he will give guidance to the candidates to lead the election campaign.

“I will explain to them what their job is and what we expect from them.”

It will be the first time that MKP will run for local government elections.

This party led by the former president, Mr. Jacob Zuma, surprised many in the 2024 national election, as it became the third largest party in Parliament, and also led the way in votes in KwaZulu-Natal.

The results of 2024, show that MKP would have taken over a number of municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal if councilors were voted for.

MKP has more than five councilors in KwaZulu-Natal in different municipalities including Theku and KwaDukuza Municipality.

All these councilors won in the by-election held after the 2024 election.

MKP is just preparing for the elections, there is still doubt as to whether this party will contest the elections.

Zuma recently revealed that they want the election postponed because there is a case they filed when they challenged the results of the 2024 election.
