The officials of the Qulusini Municipality have complained, the DA is blocking the proposal to reward them with bonuses.

The proposal that council officers be given bonuses was rejected at the council meeting after the DA expressed his opposition to the proposal.

The municipality is jointly managed by IFP and DA. The DA’s refusal to support the motion caused it to fail.

The DA Councillor, Mr. Swelakhe Shelembe, said that they decided to oppose the proposal because there was no evidence given to them to show that the officials who were to be given bonuses did their work in an admirable manner.

“Giving a bonus to someone without showing that they did everything they were assigned to do is like giving them public money. There should be a report with evidence that a person was able to do everything they were assigned before you thank them with a bonus.”

Shelembe said they asked the officials who were proposed to be given bonuses to bring proof that they were able to do everything they were assigned.

“Because the evidence we wanted was not brought, the proposal to give them bonuses was not successful. We have instructed the municipal manager to make sure that no proposal like this will be brought to the council meeting unless it is in line with the evidence.”

Shelembe said it is difficult to discuss the issue of giving bonuses to council officials when the infrastructure of the council is failing.

He said that joint governance will not make them agree to anything proposed by the party they are cooperating with.

“We have shown that today by opposing this proposal. When we entered the government we committed to work with integrity and we again committed to ensure that the people get what they need. We will not deviate from the commitments we made. We will not agree to decisions that will not help the people of Qulusi. The people of Qulusi should know how their money has worked.”
