Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) surprising decision to take the SA U19 captaincy away from David Teeger made waves on Friday, with former South African national captain and CSA president Ali Bacher saying the 19-year-old was a “born leader” who would grow “mentally stronger” from what has been a whirlwind few months in the spotlight.
Teeger, who graduated from King Edwards XII High School (KES) as head boy and first team captain last year, landed himself in hot water in October 2023 when, while accepting an award at the Jewish Achievers Awards Ceremony, he praised Israeli soldiers who are currently at war with Hamas in Gaza.
“Yes, I’ve been [given] this award, and, yes, I’m now the Rising Star, but the true rising stars are the young soldiers in Israel,” Teeger said at the time.
