A suspect who was allegedly involved in the kidnapping of a Pakistani businessman was shot dead by the KwaZulu-Natal police.
According to col. Robert Netshiunda, police spokesperson, is looking for two other suspects in connection with the kidnapping.
The businessman was kidnapped in Hluhluwe on 6 May after which a ransom of R200 000 was demanded for his release.
“An amount of R90 000 was paid and the victim was released on the condition that the balance would be paid after his freedom was guaranteed.”
Empangeni’s tactical response team (TRT) launched an operation and an escorted delivery of the outstanding balance was arranged.
According to Netshiunda, a package was dropped off on the N2 on Saturday evening and three suspects, traveling in a bakkie, arrived to pick up the package.
“The TRT officers confronted the suspects and a shooting ensued. One suspect was shot dead at the scene, the second suspect fled into the bushes, while the third suspect drove away. The bakkie he was driving was later found abandoned on the N2 ramp at Empangeni.”
A firearm whose serial number had been filed off was found in the possession of the deceased suspect. The search for the other two suspects continues.
