Orlando Pirates (0) 1

Mamelodi Sundowns (2) 2

MAMELODI Sundowns reminded those who began to doubt why they have won the title of the South African big league eight times in a row, when they won against Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership game last night, at FNB Stadium, Nasrec.

The game started with a focus on whether Pirates will succeed in extending the points gap to nine at the top of the log or Sundowns with a game left will reduce it.

Although at first it seemed as if Pirates were better with two chances blocked by Ronwen Williams, but they went into the break trailing behind with two goals scored by Bryan Leon in the 37th and 40th minute.

Both teams started the game in good form in the league since Pirates did not know a stick in 14 league games while Sundowns last in the last six.

The momentum with which the Pirates came back from the break earned a goal through the foot of Patrick Maswanganyi. As expected, Pirates stepped up their gear but it was clear that Sundowns were not burdened.

Before the match, Sundowns coach, Miguel Cardoso, said he has no doubts that his players know what to do.

“The situation we are in is new for Sundowns since they are used to being in contention for the title. Therefore, there is nothing special that we should do other than play the way we are used to but be careful when opportunities arise,” said Cardoso to SuperSport.

This result not only closes the gap for Pirates at the top but also opens the door for Sundowns to equalize with points if they win the remaining game as they will face MaZulu in Durban on Wednesday.

Realizing that time is running out, the Pirates coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, removed Oswin Appollis and replaced him with Andre De Jong, while for Sundowns, Themba Zwane and Marcelo Allende entered.

In another Betway Premiership match, Stellenbosch drew 1-1 with Magesi at Danie Craven Stadium, Stellenbosch.
