The City of Cape Town’s disaster management center says several parts of the metro have already been hit by the severe weather, with Chapman’s Peak Drive closed due to dangerous conditions and a collapsed road in Bellville requiring repair.

The city confirmed that Church Street in Bellville had partially caved in, while a sinkhole had also developed in Atlantis. Both have since been repaired.

The latest incidents follow after a series of intense cold fronts hit the Western Cape. Maroela Media reported earlier that heavy rain, strong wind and dangerous sea conditions have already led to numerous road closures in the Central Karoo, Overberg and Garden Route.

According to the city, several roads across the metro were flooded and drains blocked. Crews were deployed to assess damage and clear areas.

Storm damage was reported in Westridge, Mitchells Plain and Hanover Park where roofs blew off. Flooding was also reported in parts of Khayelitsha, Hout Bay, Strand and the Nyanga.

The city says weather-related power outages have been reported in several areas, with crews working to restore electricity.

Crews from the city’s recreation and parks department also remove downed trees and branches that pose safety hazards.

The weather service has already issued an orange level 8 warning for disruptive rain in mountainous parts of the Western Cape. Warnings for strong winds, dangerous sea conditions and possible snow also apply in several areas.

The Western Cape government has warned motorists to obey road closures and not drive through flooded roads. Meanwhile, Chapman’s Peak Drive remains closed until conditions improve.
