Four key Steinhoff executives have been criminally charged. (Sharlene Rood/News24 Business)

The sudden death of Steinhoff’s longtime CEO, Markus Jooste, has upended two major fraud cases against him in South Africa and Germany.

Jooste died by suicide in Hermanus on Thursday last week, a day before he had been ordered to hand himself over to the Hawks.

While Jooste had become nearly synonymous with SA’s largest private sector fraud, he was far from the only person linked to the disgraced furniture retailer facing charges.
