A public prosecutor from Randburg, Dinesh Nandkissor, is facing charges of sexual assault, intimidation, corruption and obstruction of justice.

According to reports, the complainant initially approached him for help with her brother’s legal case. He apparently requested her to come back the next day, after which the alleged assault took place.

It is further alleged that Nandkissor then tried to persuade the complainant not to report the incident to the police. He reportedly offered a vacation and promised to help solve her brother’s case. Nandkissor later handed himself over to the police, while the complainant reported the incident to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) by email.

He denies all the allegations and was released on bail of R3 000. The case was adjourned until May 7.

Terrence Manase, spokesperson for the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, says the department is monitoring the case closely.

The national director of public prosecutions, adv. Andy Mothibi, meanwhile, emphasized that all members of the NPA must comply with the code of conduct.

“Failure to do so will have consequences,” Mothibi said.

The case raises serious questions about security in courthouses, accountability within the legal system and the possible abuse of power towards members of the public, according to Judges Matter.
